Still Life

This class is a unique opportunity for art students of all levels to investigate the principles of light, color, form and composition in still life painting .

Through frequent demonstrations and personal critique, the instructor will guide the students through the entire process of still life painting – from the initial set-up and drawing, to the color study and finished painting.

Throughout the class, the studio will be filled with a variety of objects for students to paint. There will be an emphasis on incorporating different textures and surfaces in the still lives – glass, copper, cloth, stone, fruits, and flowers, etc.

Students will have the option of painting a series of small, still lives or concentrate on one larger, painting

Portraits

This class gives opportunity for beginners, serious students and emerging artists to study portraiture.

This class instructor examines the visual concepts that define portraiture, likeness and character.

The painting section will build upon, examining portrait design and execution in oils. It will emphasize color perception and keying the light, efficient under drawing, monochromatic under painting, and painting with oils wet-into-wet (aka, “out of a base” or “form painting”) with a 24-color, prismatic palette.

This class is an opportunity for beginners, serious students and emerging artists to benefit from  class critique on portraiture, while completing a finished portrait painting. The class is an introduction to the painting method that she has studied and practiced for over eight years.

During this class, frequent individual demonstrations will be given in both drawing and wet-into-wet oil painting techniques, including: preparatory drawing on paper in pencil and/or chalk (“transfer drawing”), color thumbnail study (“poster study”), chromatic under painting (“color wash”), and single-pass painting execution (“form painting”). Students are encouraged to ask questions during demonstrations and one-on-one critiques.

This class will emphasize an optical study of light and form. Likeness, structural analysis of the features, color harmony and tonal composition will be addressed.

Plein air landscape painting or landscape in class

Painting a field study (plein air painting) is an exercise in observing natural phenomena and then organizing a composition based on a visual concept that supports it. The painter attempts to gather as much truth as possible about what aspect of nature he is choosing to emphasize. The artist’s attempt to convey a simple idea has much to do with editing or selective seeing. In fact, all great visual ideas are rather simple, precisely because so much is edited.  Only for morning classes, on locations.
